Woodpeckers of Carillon Stonegate Pond

Common Name: Red-bellied Woodpecker.

Key Markings: 

  • Orange-red on back of head.

  • Black and white striped back

  • Red spot on belly is not noticeable

Key Markings: 

  • Smaller than Hairy Woodpecker

  • Black-and-white-striped head.

  • Black back with bold white spots

  • Small red nape or spot on back of head (male only)

  • Black markings on white outer tail feathers

Common Name: Hairy Woodpecker.

Key Markings: 

  • Larger than Downy Woodpecker

  • Black-and-white-striped head.

  • Black back with bold white spots

  • Small red nape or spot on back of head (male only)

  • No markings on white outer tail feathers

Common Name: Redheaded Woodpecker.

Key Markings: 

  • Dark red or crimson head

  • Black back

Common Name: Northern Flicker.

Key Markings: 

  • Crown - gray

  • Red "V" marking on back of head

  • Brown back with black stripes

The Carillon at Stonegate community is very fortunate to have a variety of wetland, forest and prairie environments conducive to a variety of birds and other wildlife, plants and insects. Our community and the Kane County Forest Preserve do an exceptional job in maintaining this natural environment – both for the benefit of the birds and wildlife and for our residents to enjoy.
